He is also the Chief of the Section of Biomedical Data Science in the Department of Medicine and the Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO) of the Biological Sciences Division.
Awards and Honors
- ACM Fellow, 2016, “For contributions to data science, data intensive computing and data mining.
- Chicago Crains Tech 50, 2016, citation: “Few people know more about Big Data than Grossman. The feds chose him to build Genomic Data Commons at U of C, which houses more than 4 petabytes of genetic data from years of cancer research. Why him? He built software that allowed researchers to use clusters of smaller computers to do heavy statistical modeling, instead of relying on big individual machines. He also built software to standardize computer models, allowing researchers to deploy them in minutes instead of months.”
- AAAS Fellow, 2013, in the Section on Information, Computing, and Communication.
- Federal 100 Award Winner, 2013, citation: “He co-led a Defense Science Board task force on cloud security and reliability, helped NASA develop a public cloud solution for satellite data, and counseled other agencies on cloud adoption and advanced analytics.”

Involvement with the Not for Profit Community
- Open Commons Consortium (OCC)
Director, 2008-present
The Open Commons Consortium (OCC) is a not for profit that manages and operates cloud computing and data commons infrastructure to support scientific, medical, health care and environmental research.- OCC members span the globe and include over 30 universities, companies, government agencies and national laboratories.
- The OCC operated operated the Open Science Data Cloud from 2010-2016, which supported over 860 research projects from 55 organizations spanning 14 countries.
- The OCC and the University of Chicago developed the BloodPAC Data Commons for liquid biopsies in 2016, which was one of the public private partnerships that was part of Vice President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot.
